Confidentiality

Confidentiality is paramount in counselling and psychotherapy. Without confidentiality it would be difficult if not impossible to build trust between counsellor and client. As a Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy I am bound by the BACP Ethical framework in my practice. There are very few sets of circumstances in which a counsellor would break confidentiality, but these circumstances, set out by the BACP, include: (a) if your life is in danger, (b) if someone else's life was in danger, or (c) if a Court of Law compels the counsellor to speak about a client. These circumstances are highly unusual. What you choose to bring to counselling remains protected by the counsellor's commitment to confidentiality. To break confidentiality for any other reason than those listed above would place a counsellor outside of the BACP ethical framework and therefore subject to possible disciplinary action. As a Member, I am fully committed to the BACP's Code of Ethics and Practice.
